Homework Help: Art: Artists: Arthur Boyd
by Emily McPherson
After Arthur left school, he learned to
paint with oils from his grandfather who lived in
Rosebud.
Consequently many of his early works had a beach
theme - either areas around Wilson's Promontory,
Rosebud, or Cape Schank. He showed innovation in
his landscapes and seascapes by using a palette-knife technique.
His paintings immediately
following World War II were more psychological in
nature, and expressed sadness at his own suffering
both in the army and in being admitted to a military
hospital for some time.
"The Mockers," painted in 1945, is one these disturbing pictures. One of his
closest artist friends, Wilfred McCulloch, was killed
during the war in 1942. He became interested for a while
in making pots, tiles, and ceramics; and in the early
1950's experimented with paintings on tiles. This
interest and talent resulted in him being commissioned
to design and make the 9 meter high ceramic pylon.
