Homework Help: Art: Artists: Frederick Mccubbin

Frederick Mccubbin was a artist and Drawing master in his life time. He’s born on the 25th February, 1855 in 165 King Street, Melbourne. Frederick was born with a family of eight children, where he was the third son of his father Alexander. Three older brothers and four younger sisters.

In his schooling life Frederick was educated at William Willmott’s West Melbourne Common School. He also attended St. Paul’s School, Swanston Street, Melbourne. In 1869 he worked as a solicitor’s clerk, where his father found him a position in a solicitor’s office. He later on enrolled in evening classes of the Artisan’s School of Design, Lygon Street , Carlton. For five years from 1871, he was a apprentice where he was a coach painter witth Elliot and Stevenson.

Mccubbin married Annie Lucie Moriaty at St. Ignatius Church, Richmond, Victoria on 5th March 1889; Tom Roberts was his best man. Following his marriage Mccubbin would paint "Down with his Luck", which was to recognise those unlucky gold diggers during the gold rush years. Mccubbin had children very suddenly after his marriage. His family in late 1893 left Hawthorn to live at Lot 52 Wolseley Crescent, Blackburn. This is where, he painted "Bush Idyll", and "Feeding Time", 1893. He gave his work to the National Gallery of Victoria, where the Gallery would later switch it for " A Winter Evening", 1897

In 1989, Kathleen renamed Victorian art galleries, in favour of her father Mccubbin for the respect of his artwork. Many of his works were popular that he made many national art galleries around Australia. A Centenary Exhibition of Mccubbin’s artwork in 1955 to commemorate the e birth of the prolific artist.
