Homework Help: Computers: Operating Systems: Linux

N. Nelson

Linux is a free clone of Unix. It was developed back in 1991 by Linus Torvalds during his college years. It was around the time when the first version of the Linux Kernel (which was version .02) was released. As Linus and his hacker friends worked on the project in their spare time, it got better and more useful. Back in 1994, the version 1.0 of the Kernel was released. Ever since then, the Linux Kernel kept getting better and better and now it is 2.0 (but has upgrade patches).

Linux is confusing at first because it is so powerful. You aren't just using an operating system like Windows, you are using a whole server! Linux does have a GUI in it called the X-Windows system. It is almost an identical match to Windows 95 or Windows 98. It even has the start button. If you want to learn more about Linux, go to http://www.linux.org/ and they will have tons of information on it.
