Homework Help: English: Books, Novels & Plays: The Cay
Story written by Theodore Taylor
1. Phillip was the most important character, in "The Cay"!
Phillip was cared alot for Timothy, even when he died. Phillip said to the air,
"Why did you only take only one of us, but not all?". Yes I admire him. He
could do some of the same thing Timothy could do, even though he was
blind. He learned how to fish, for example, by Timothy's teachings. Before
the ship they had been on was bombed, he thought that war was cool. He
liked war alot! Now he understands that war is not so cool anymore. The war
is what got him stuck on the island in the first place! He also changed his
feelings about black people. In the Begining he said, "Mother was right,
black people are different. They live different, and they are different"
Now he is trying to become friends with this man who is black and changes
decision of agreeing with his mother! He is an interesting character to learn
about, in this book!
2. The setting of the story is important. The story would not be
the same with a different setting. The story can not take place anywhere.
For an example, the story cannot take place in New York City. The problem
would not be the same. Nothing would. On the streets of New York City
there are alot of problems, but the problem would not be that they are
stranded and nobody can find them. The whole story would be different.
3. At time I do approve of the way the characters handle their
conflicts and problems, and at times I don't. I do approve of when they got
stranded on the island, and they went right to work. Timothy made shelter,
got food, and looked for the best in Phillip. I also think they should have
talked more about their decisions. I don't think having Phillip climb the tree
was a smart idea because Phillip was blind. It was probably dangerous,
especially for Phillip, because it must have been hard to feel the tree without
almost falling. There were points in the story that I approved and points that I didn't!
4. From Phillips point of view at one point he thought Timothy
was mean, because he wouldn't give him the amount of water that he
wanted. Timothy:
" Phillip wanted more water. I only gave him
a little bit of water, because we needed the fresh
to be saved so it could help us survive. If he had
taken more of the water, we wouldn't have had
enough to survive."
Timothy had a good point for not drinking all of the water,
even if you were that thirsty.
5. The most exciting part in the story was the hurricane.
There was alot of rain. The thunder was loud. They had to stay in the
hut that they had made. They had gotten alot of fresh water from it
too! Timothy was mad that he did not make enough to catch more fresh
water, because the amount of rain could last them a really long time.
Plus, they did not know how long they were going to be on that island,
so they would need alot of water. The hurricane was very useful to their
needs.
6. Phillip and Timothy were different in many ways. Phillip is
prejudice because he thinks they all live different, they are different, he
thinks that Timothy is an ugly blackmen, and he called Timothy "mister", at
first. He is stubborn because he did not listen to Timothy about the water,
and he refused to try raw fish. Timothy is caring because he saved Phillip's
life, even though he was a stranger. He helped him to see with the different
paths he made. He is respectful because he called Phillip "young bahass", and
he did not hit Phillip, when Phillip hit him. He said,"If it makes you happy,
you may keep on doing that". He is wise because he new about rationed
water, he made a shelter from clothes, and he surveyed the land, to see
how safe it was. Phillip was young and white. Timothy was old and black.
They both lived interesting lives!
7. The lessons that I learned from this book were that you
shouldn't judge people by their color because deep down inside we are all
humans, no matter what he or she looks like on the outside. The book was
dedicated to "Dr.King's dream, which can only come true if the very young
know and understand". I also learned that you should respect others
decisions, whether you agree with them or not. There were alot of lessons to
learn from this book!
