Story written by Patricia Hermes
List Of Characters:
1. Elizabeth Barker
2. Jessie Bolton
Elizabeth Barker is a nine-year-old, English girl in Jamestown, Virginia, in the year of 1609. She has blond hair, blue eyes, and freckles. She is thin, and tall. She babbles, and was born in October. She is sometimes careless and forgetful to pray at times. Elizabeth, in the story, makes friends with two girls, Jessie and Claire. She helps her dad build their new home, since her twin brother, Caleb, could not go to America because of his bad lungs. She went with Captain John Smith and a few other men to keep the peace between them and the Indians. Her friend, Pocahontas, introduces her to their culture and how they live. Elizabeth's purpose in the story is because she is the person telling the story. She is the person who wrote in the book, and her life is what the diary is about.
Jessie Bolton is also a nine-year-old, English girl in Jamestown, Virginia, in the year of 1609. She has the same appearance as Elizabeth, blond hair, blue eyes, and freckles. She was also born in October and is the same height as Elizabeth. She is thoughtful, and she does not babble. She also has a prayerful mind. Jessie, in the story, makes two friends, Elizabeth and Claire. She helps her dad stand by her mom's side while her mom was very sick, until her mom died. After her mom died, she was more quiet than usual, but she got past it. She felt that her dad didn't get past her mom's death because at the end of the story her father decides to go back to England, taking Jessie with him. She was also friends with and Indian girl, named Pocahontas. Character's purpose in the story is very important, because she is Elizabeth's best friend. She comforted Elizabeth when Elizabeth's mom was in labor with Elizabeth's soon-to-be-sister, Abigail. Jessie also gets a lot of comfort from Elizabeth, especially when Jessie's mom died. The two girls live in the lives of each other, and I think the without Jessie, it would have been hard for Elizabeth to make America her new home.
Elizabeth's Diary was a very interesting book to read. A family, the Barkers, came to Jamestown, Virginia, from England, in 1609, with a fleet of ships holding people, horses, and food. Elizabeth Barker took her brother's drawing book and she used it as a diary. She told about the trip from England, across the Atlantic, to America. She describes it as frightening and scary because there was a very dangerous storm during the trip. There were people falling off the boat, people being washed away with the waves, people who tied themselves to the mast but the mast broke off, and there were mice, which were eating some of the supply of food. When they got to America they were happy they had finally made it to land. It was very hard for them though to live in America, because they had to build their own home.
They complained about too many bugs and that they thought the Indians were robbing them of food while they were asleep. Most of their homes were finished being built by the winter. Many people died because of the sicknesses from the ship and the many diseases they found here in America. Elizabeth's friend Jessie's mother died. Elizabeth met Jessie aboard the ship. They went hunting for plants, especially those with medicine cures. Captain John Smith was the leader. He kept peace with the Indians, until some of the English people were not satisfied with the supply of food and accused the Indians. The English people started hunting in the Indians territory. This made the Indians mad, in which they started attacking the English who crossed onto their territory.
After this, Captain John Smith scheduled a ship to sail back to England. The ship would carry the wounded men and some other, with their families. One of the other people included Jessie's father. Jessie had to go with him since her mother had died. This made Elizabeth and Jessie really sad. Elizabeth asked Captain John smith if her could visit her brother Caleb and give him the notebook. He agreed to it, and Jessie and her father would visit Caleb with Captain John Smith. Jessie promised Elizabeth that she would tell Caleb about their new baby sister, Abigail. This is why I thought that "Our Strange New Land" was a very interesting book to read.
