Homework Help: Health: Diseases & Disorders: Empty Nest Syndrome

by Calvin Che

In last Practical Writing English Class, Mrs. Xiong presented us a short video named Mailbox. When I am very impressed with pitiful old women in it, I also contemplate deeply.

The video narrated a story about a lonely old women who lived alone in a village because her husband passed away and her only beloved daughter was busy with her work in other city. What the old woman faced everyday were a big empty house and a lovely little girl occasionally from the next door. What she most craved for was to receive a letter from her daughter, but only empty mailbox waited for her. At last she received a letter. She was so excited that she suffered from heart attack and even had no chance to see the letter. What a pitiful women! It took me several minutes to contemplate the scene. In fact ,this reflect a social phenomenon, the so-called empty nest syndrome, which exists in most developed countries. Although the reasons partly lie in society, should young generation, such as the daughter in the video ,undertake more responsibilities?

Likewise, empty nest syndrome is also a commonplace facing all of us in preset China. Is it still indispensable we should have filial piety in present society? There is no gainsaying the answer is clear. There are some reasons .First of all, Filial piety is a traditional virtue of our Chinese People and there is no doubt that it is still a virtue young generation in China should have. Second, like commitment to society and dedication to work, filial piety is also a responsibility for society. Every young people should undertake it. Finally, filial piety is in return for parents. All of us are born and bred by our parents. During we grow, they give us a lot, especially unselfish love. So we should care more for them. So,we should have virtue of filial piety and for sake of happiness of old people , empty nest syndrome should disappear for ever.

Thus, how to tackle empty nest syndrome? A series of measures should be taken. First of all, some educational programs about traditional virtue should be carried out so as to strengthen young people¡¯s social responsibilities .If they cherish this traditional virtue, they will give their loves to their parents ,maybe only one call or one letter. The next measure is to enhance well-being of old people. Various relative departments even all society should take actions, for instance, including setting up old people¡¯s home and enriching their daily livings, especially their mental livings. Another measure is a law should be established so that filial piety becomes a compulsory deed. In spite of rigour, the law will at least arouse peoples moral consciousness.

So the video was over, but all of us can learn a lot from it.There are not only sympathizing with the pitiful old woman and realizing drawbacks of that daughter. We should take united actions to curb empty nest syndrome. Our present society need more filial piety so that all old people, including our parents, lead happy livings.
