Homework Help: Health: Environment Safety: Environment Around Us

by Leo Galleguillos

Our environment includes everything around us. It's the air we breathe, water we drink, and the land we step on. In one day, the average person will breathe in about 25 pounds of air and drink 2.5 quarts of water. We owe it to our environment to keep it safe.

Air

The air we breathe is 78% nitrogen, 21% oxygen, and 1% other. Oxygen in the air is what keeps your cells active and healthy. Harmful substances in the air will often keep your body from performing normally.

Water

Yes, almost three quarters of the world is covered with water. That doesn't mean we have a surplus amount of it. Most water is found in oceans and is salt water. Salt water cannot be used for drinking, farming, and home use. Fresh water is what we can drink and use. Most fresh water comes from streams, rivers, and lakes, but it may also come from the ground.

Land

As said before, a large proportion of our water comes from the ground. That's why we need to take care of it. Land contains different types of soils, rocks, and minerals. It is also used to grow crops on farms.
