Homework Help: Health: Nutrition: Water

Water is so vital in helping your body to function effectively as people can only survive a few days without it, and half of your body weight is water. Water helps carry nutrients to other organs and also help to empty wastage. When looking at the circulatory system, being fluid water is the main ingredient in blood.

Fluids in your digestive system also consist much of water in order for things to be broken down properly. When sweating and urinating, water is the main ingredient, helping to maintain body temperature and be rid of liquid waste.

Water helps your joints in moving as oil does to a creaky door. Mucus, which is in your eyes, throat, nose and stomach also, consists of the magic ingredient. Saliva is also something that would not exist without the miracle of water, without it your mouth would be very dry. When digesting food and fluids water is what helps to move the things on to the next stage through your body. Something that might help you understand this is if you have a tube and stuff bread into it and try to get it through the other side, but if you add a little water things are much easier. This is what happens when you are constipated there is not enough water to keep things moving.

The recommended amount of water to drink a day is six to eight cups, remember you can also get some of your water from fruit and vegetables like celery, cucumber, watermelon and lettuce. You can never drink to much water.

  • You lose around 2 litres of water a day
  • Water is calorie free no matter how much you drink, so there is no excuses!
  • Drinking water while exercising is even more important (cold water is better)
  • 1-2 hours before exercising drink a cup and a half of water
  • 10-15 min before exercising drink a cup and a quarter
  • while exercising drink half a cup every 15 Min
  • after exercising drink about 2 cups of water

Even when you're not thirsty just drink water anyway, you'll feel more energised and ready to face the day. You should never get to the stage where you are thirsty unless exercising as this means you are dehydrated. Personally I am a water tank, the more water I drink the more energy I seem to get. More energy could also mean a better mark in the dreaded maths test.
