Homework Help: Home Economics: Cooking: The Dreaded Hot Dogs
by Alex Haro
Hot dogs are everywhere you look. They're in ball parks, they're in
stands, they're in your fridge and in your hands. They taste really
nasty, all old and crusty. They plump when you cook them, make you
regret that you took them. You'll be in misery, for trying the hot
dogs shrouded in mystery. The meats in them are unknown, maybe that's
why they taste so forlorn. If anyone offers, I'd say no thanks, I'd
prefer to stay away from those franks.
Hot dogs, in my opinion, are the most disgusting food on the face
of the planet. They are nothing more than mystery meat. They contain
20% mechanically seperated beef or pork, meaning that a machine rips
off any edible pieces of meat from the bone and makes a pastey,
batter-like meat product. Ever notice that nice snap when you bite
into a freshly grilled hot dog? That's the natural casing made from
sterilized animal intestine. Sometimes other meat by-products are used,
like beef heart and the hot dogs are sometimes filled with oat
bran, dry milk and yeast to add nutritional value. I shudder at the
thought of eating a hot dog.
Believe it or not, there are people that like hot dogs. Some like
them for their juicyness. Others seem to like them because of the
relish, mustard, ketchup, and other various toppings. There are even
people who go for hot dogs only because of their taste. No matter
how hard it is to believe, there are, and always will be fans of
hot dogs.
In writing it from both viewpoints, I have learned to accept
people's differences in taste. I, although will never eat a hot dog,
will not be so harsh in judging those that do. Maybe others should
just accept that everyone is original and that they have their own
tastes.
