Homework Help: Home Economics: Sewing: Sewing Ideas

Erica Walters & Joanne Holland

Here are a lot of project ideas in case your still thinking about what to sew.

Beanie Baby

First, decide on a fairly simple shape. A good one could be a fish. With a pencil, draw it out on a piece of tissue paper. When you are satisfied overline it in marker. Place the tissue paper on top of two pieces of cloth, and then pin it together with as few pins. Carefully sew on the marker line, making sure to do reverse stitch at the start and finish. Be sure to leave a two inch opening for you to put the filling in. Once you have finished sewing, remove the pins and tissue paper. Cut the material out about one-fourth of an inch away from the outside of the stitching. Turn the material inside out, and you should have what looks like a fish, or the other figure you chose. Stuff it with dry corn or beans, and then hand-sew the gap closed. There you have your beanie animal! Instead of dry corn or beans, you may stuff it with real cotton stuffing if you'd like a stuffed animal instead.

Knee Patch

You can easily make a knee patch for a pair of jeans or anything else that has a hole in it. Just get the proper material and cut it out into a nice little square. Of course, the actual sewing part is when you actually sew the patch on, so you may have to show your teacher what you could actually do with it.

Pillow

First, choose some neat fabric. Try to make it match your room. Cut out two rectangles of the same size. These rectangles should be slightly larger than the size you want your pillow at when you're finished. Put the rectangles together and then pin them. Sew around three edges of it (use the 20 mark on the sewing machine), making sure to reverse stitch at the start and finish. Stuff the pillow with cotton batting. Sew the remaining side closed, making sure to turn the raw edges in. There you have your funky pillow!

Stuffed Animal

You can make a great gift by making a stuffed animal with fabric and felt. Of course, you would have to get specific steps from a source. Plus, it may take up to a month to complete it, but in the end it could make an awesome gift!

Towel

Get an old bath or beach towel, or cut a piece of cloth about that size and hem it all around. Then sew a length of bias tape or ribbon to the top, and tie it around your waist.
