Homework Help: Physical Education: Sports: How To Do Rolls in Gymnastics
I bet you thought this when you watched the Gymnastics in the Olympics:
How in the world can they do a roll or flip like that?? Well, I?ve
asked myself that and I used to be afraid to try one. But now, I have
the simple instructions on how to do simple rolls. I will make them easy
and clear to follow. Have fun! And always remember: Always try these on
a soft surface; preferably a gym mat.
1) Forward Rolls- This is an easy basic roll to follow. First, squat
down on your knees. Make sure your legs are together. Put the tips of
your hands on the ground. Tuck your chin as much as you can, towards
your chest. You have to make your body in a very small ball. Then, push
off your feet forward- and off you will go! Make sure, you don?t roll
off to the side of the mat!! Don?t make your head touch the mat, since
that will put too much pressure on your head. Instead, try to put the
pressure on your shoulders. Roll all the way back to your position- and
there you have a forward roll!!
See how this man kneels on his knees and rolls back to position
after rolling??
2)Egg Roll- This is sort of complicated- and you have to use your body?s
strength!! Lie on the gym mat and have your knees pulled to your chest.
Then, bring your head to your knees. Keep your body in a tight-tuck
position, and try to roll to your side. Remember; use your weight to push
you!! For an example, look at the Egg Roll example on the chart above.
3)Log Roll- For this roll, you must lie down on the mat. Then, roll
yourself in a straight and smooth roll. Make sure you don?t roll off the mat. Act as if you?re a log and are rolling!!
4)Pike Roll- This is a roll when you do a forward roll, but by standing
up.
5)Straddle Roll- In this roll, you have to do the forward roll, but you
have to keep your feet apart as far as possible. You also have to land
on your feet far apart.
6)Arabesque- This is like the pike, but you have to have one leg
stretched out and you have to do a forward roll.
