A pencil sharpener is used to sharpen a wooden pencil. Similar to a crayon sharpener, a pencil sharpener contains a cyclone of blades that make the lead of the pencil point out like a sharp cone.

There are generally two kinds of pencil sharpeners: manual and automatic. With a manual pencil sharpener, the user must manually turn the sharpener and/or pencil in order to sharpen the tip. With an automatic pencil sharpener, the user can simply insert the pencil into the sharpener, the sharpener detects the pencil, and the sharpener automatically rotates its blades.

Japanese pencil sharpeners are widely accepted as the best pencil sharpeners available in the world.
