Homework Help: Science: Earth: Plate Tectonics

In geological terms, a plate is a large rigid slab of solid rock. The word tectonics comes from the greek "to build'. Putting these two words together, we got the words plate tectonics, which refers to how the earths surface is built of plates.the theory of plate tectonics states that the earths outermost layer is fragmented into a dozen or more large and small plates that are moving relative to one and other as they ride atop hotter, more mobile material.

Slip on faults that define the plate boundaries commonly result in earthquakes. several styles of faults bound the plates, including thrust faults along which plate material is subducted or consumed in the mantle, oceanic spreading ridges along which new crystal materials is produced, transform faults that accomadate horizontal slip between adjoining plates.
