Homework Help: Science: Physics: Volume
by Leo Galleguillos
Volume, by definition, is the amount of space something takes up. For example, a book may take up one-tenth of a cubic foot, while a computer screen will take up one cubic foot. Everything that exists in this world has volume, including desks, chairs, air, water, and you! An item with volume can also be known as matter.
The three most common forms of matter are solids, liquids, and gases. These are the called the three states of matter.
The volume of matter can also change when the surrounding temperature changes. Usually, when matter is heated, its volume will increase. On the other hand, if the matter is cooled, it will decrease in volume.
Gases change in volume more easily than liquids or solids. Gases tend to spread out in all directions. For example, when someone farts, everyone smells it because the poopy gases are spreading out all over the room!
The three states of matter (solids, liquids, and gases) also have definitions for themselves. A solid is anything that stays in the shape it's in. A liquid takes the shape of the container it's in. A gas will spread out until it hits a container. Some things in this world, such as old glue or mud, don't fit any of these definitions. That's what makes the study of matter and volume so interesting.
