Homework Help: Social Studies: People: Asashoryu

Asashoryu, Dolgorsuren Dagvadorj, both one in the same the first yokozuna of Mongolian decent, well as you can imagine this caused a bit of a stir up! Being the 68th yokozuna, great things are expected and many of his achievements include winning 3 Emperors Cups in a row, eight Emperors Cups altogether, three outstanding performance awards, three fighting spirit prizes, taking only 24 tournaments to win his first championship, and being considered a lightweight in sumo at 139kg and 184cm tall but builds up stamina and agility to beat his opponents.

Between his busy schedule he managed to marry his high school sweetheart in December 2001 and they had a daughter. He even invited the Mongolian Prime Minister to his wedding!

Asashoryu being only his ring name, shoryu coming from the blue dragon temple near the ryu campus, altogether meaning Blue Dragon of the Morning. He powered through the ranks at a startling pace, believing that practise is most important and also that Mongolia, creates a good breed of wrestlers, their rugged lifestyle creating tough wrestlers.

Like everyone Asashoryu is not perfect and has been caught out acting inappropriate on many occasions. He was the first ever yokozuna to be disqualified from pulling opponents hair, this caused great disgrace to sumo and many questioned his ranking of sumo. He refused to adopt Japanese citizenship. Was spotted wearing a suit instead of traditional sumo clothing in a public appearance, this was greatly shunned upon. In matches he has been known to stare and disagree with referees decisions.

He was born September 27th 1980, Ulanbator Mongolia. Mongolian wrestling is Mongolias national sport and very similar to sumo wrestling, as this is not as popular as sumo he decided to leave to goto Japan at sixteen in order to pursue his love of wrestling. Having one older brother wrestling in Japan and his father and another older brother wrestling in Mongolia, wrestling had a major influence on his life. January 1999 was when Asashoryu first started professional wrestling. His Heya was in Takasago. He was promoted to yokozuna in January 2003. Asashoryu is currently the only yokozuna; there can be four of them at any time.

Asashoryu wishes to win a gold medal for Mongolia, as they have never got one. He is hoping Sumo wrestling will be made an Olympic sport, but look into another martial art such as judo in order to live his dream.
