Homework Help: Social Studies: People: Nefertiti, a Woman Pharoah that Changed Egypt

Nefertiti was a very powerful queen who changed Egypt. She was so powerful that archeologists believe Nefertiti was buried in the Valley of the Kings, where highly respected male pharaohs rest in peace. Many hieroglyphics often show Nefertiti doing things only pharaohs would do.

The reign of Nefertiti and her husband Akhneton was called the Amarna Revolution because of all the religious, social, and art changes. Nefertiti and Akhenaten where heretics, and they were the first ones to preach monotheism. They built temples for only the sun god, Aten, and made people worship him.

The people disliked Nefertiti and Akhneton, but they did not show it. Nefertiti was the only one who supported Akhenaten. While Nefertiti and Akhenaten were alive the people did not talk about what they did. When Nefertiti and Akhenaten died what they did was the main subject of gossip. The people learned to deal with Nefertiti but they hated Akhenaten. After Nefertiti and Akhenaten died the people went back to their old religion.

Very little is known about Nefertiti's mysterious life, but Archeologists managed to uncover some interesting facts. Her husband was Akhenaten. Nefertiti gave birth to six girls. Nefertiti was Tutkanhamen's stepmother.

Archeologists are trying to figure out when Nefertiti was born and who her parents were. In ancient times only the Pharaoh would perform rituals, but in pictures on tombs they show Nefertiti always performing them. Nefertiti would ride chariots, and to many manly things.

Archeologists think Nefertiti got some power since her husband could not see well. And since her husband could not see well she could do things behind his back. On hieroglyphics they show Nefertiti wearing the sacred ceremonial beard.

Nefertiti was not only very powerful but she was also very pretty. Nefertiti's name means, " A beautiful woman has come." There are many works of art of Nefertiti, like the famous Nefertiti's Bust, and the painting of her and Akhenaten. Nefertiti's beauty and power inspired many women to follow in her path and to gain power and to be pretty. It also showed men that women could be powerful too.

Archeologists believe that King Tut's tomb was supposed to be Nefertiti's because in the tomb it has some decorations that only a woman pharaoh would have. Archeologist Nicolas Reeves is holding an expedition to find Nefertiti's tomb.

When Howard Carter discovered King Tutkanhamen's tomb Carter didn't look in a small portion of the ground because he thought it wouldn't be safe. But in that small portion of the ground is where Reeves believes Nefertiti was buried. No one has ever tried to find Nefertiti's tomb before, and everyone is very excited.

Nefertiti and Akhenaten made people worship only the sun god, and changed the people's religion. Nefertiti was very a very powerful queen and had the power of a pharaoh. When the people were forced to worship only the sun god they got mad. The people ripped down their temples when Nefertiti and Akhenaten died, and they never mentioned their names because they were so mad at how Nefertiti and Akhenaten made them worship only Aten.

Archeologists are still trying to figure out some of the mysteries about Nefertiti like her family and when she died.

Nefertiti was a woman pharaoh who changed Egypts religion, Egyptians faith and many women's attitude to life.
