Homework Help: Social Studies: U.S. History: The Battles of Trenton and Princeton

by Kriss Fridley

On December 26, 1776 Christmas night, General George Washington decided to cross the Delaware river and attack the John Glovers Marbleheaders camp at Trenton. (Or the Hessians.) Before he crossed the Delaware he capyured a Tory named John Honeyman. Most people thought he was a Tory because he sold meat to the British. He sold to the Americans to, but most people didn’t know it. So when George Washington captured John Honeyman, none of his other solders knew that he was a spy for George Washington. So he told his solders to guard Honeyman very carefully. That night George Washington set fire to a couple bales of hay, to destract his own solders. Before He had told Honeyman to go to Trenton and tell Colonel Rall that the Patriots were getting weaker and weaker, and that they could not cause a threat even if they wanted to. So that Colonel Rall would not expect the attack the next night. He did this so on Christmas night General George Washington crossed the Delaware with all his troops. It took about nine hours to get them all across the river in their Durham boats. So at about six, the next morning all of the troops were ready to attack Trenton. The Continental Army took the Hessians completely by surprise, and it was a great morale victory for the Patriots after the Hessians retreated. The patriots captured over 900 hessians, killed 22, and wounded over 100, and they gained many supplies such as bayonets. The password for this battle was Victory or . After Trenton, Washington realized that his troop’s enlistments were almost over. He begged his troops to re- enlist for at least one more month, but only 200 out of 1500 men re-enlisted. With the mem he had left, Washington decided to attack the Redcoat city of Princeton. Lord Cornwallis was the general at Princeton, and he was going to let General Howe go home to London for the winter to take care of his sick wife, but when he found out that the Continental Army was coming to attack Princeton he didn’t let General Howe go back to London. But he made him stay and fight the Patriots, but again the Continental Army caught the Redcoats by surprise and won the city of Princeton. And that is my summary of the battles of Trenton and Princeton.
