Homework Help: Social Studies: World History: Wickham
by Nikki Doley
The village of Wickham dates back to the 13th century when Henry 111 granted Roger de Scures the Lord of the manor, market and fair. Wickham is known as the birthplace of William Long who was the founder of Winchester College and then became Bishop if Winchester in 1367.
The Hampshire County Council classes Wickham as a village even though it has more services than other local villages.
Wickham has a square with lots of services for different things it has 2 newsagents, a pub, a CO OP, a Chinese takeaway, a fish and chips takeaway, a café, a bakery, a dental surgery, a butcher, a post office, 2 estate agents, a chemist and a gardening shop.
Outside the square there is: a doctors
Surgery, a florist, a fire station, a church, a recreation ground and a garage. I think Wickham was located here because it has a wide flat space to build shops and other services on. It also has a river so that the villagers could have a fresh drink of water. It had space for a train when it was built for the village's transport that is now useful for riding and walking on, as it is now a disused railway. In the 13th century I think these where the reasons they decided to build their village in this location.
