Homework Help: Social Studies: World Issues: One Child Policy
by Emily McPherson
This article is suggests that in many parts of China, the government is
loosing its battle against the one-child policy, however their effort
hasn't been in vain.
Since the late 1970s, China has enforced a population control which
allowed couples to only have once child. The policy also told people at
what age to marry, to have children, to use contraception, and to have
an abortion. These controls often inspired violence against women that
caused them to look to the free world for protection. This provoked
strong opposition from many religious and political groups from around
the world.
In many parts of China, the one child policy is now disappearing, and
the local officials who once enforced the strict laws are now accepting
money to let couples bend the rules. This is possible due to an
economic growth in which families are now able to cope without
government rewards for having only one child.
This economic growth is not necessarily a bad thing, as although it
allows more children to be born, it also allows many other families to
break out of poverty and have less children. This has resulted in a
population growth of just 1% per annum, and China will stay well within
its target of 1.3 billion by the year 2000.
The one-child-policy has made an impact on society for the better, as
although many people suffered, and now many people are bending the
rules, the policy made many people realize that by following the rules,
you would not be punished. Also, it made people aware that even if they
weren't going to follow the rules, they still should have smaller
families.
