This is an essay about the social implications of information technology and how it has had a social impact on society in the past, present and in the future. In the past communicating over long distances has been a challenge throughout history. In the ancient times, runners were used to carry important messages between rulers or other important people. Other forms of long-distance communication included smoke signals, chains of searchlights and flags to send a message from one tower to another, carrier pigeons, and horses. Modern telecommunications began in the 1800s with the discovery that electricity can be used to transmit a signal. For the first time, a signal could be sent faster than any other mode of transportation. If we did not have the telephone we would not be able to communicate with people that live far away. The telephone has had a social impact on society by providing a better way of contacting businesses, education facilities and even family who may live a long way.
In the present the computer has impacted every aspect of people’s lives. It has affected the way people work and play. It has made everyone’s life easier by doing difficult work for people. It is also the very thing I wrote this paper with. Indeed the computer is one of the greatest inventions in history.
In the present the internet has had a great deal of social impact on society in many different ways. It has been a great way to find employment for a lot of people, some of us use it for leisure to play games or meet people, but it has not always been used in a good way as there is a lot of crime on the internet such as CD burning and porn.
Today the cell phone has been a great way of communication as you can get hold of anyone anywhere anytime you can not only call them but you can also send them a message to the other person’s phone. This way of communication has had a huge social impact on society as some people rely on them for business a lot of youth today use them for leisure, and to let people know where they are. I have a cell phone and I can’t live without it.
In the future communicating will be even more advanced as you will be able to see who you are talking to just like talking to someone on the internet with a web cam. I think this will have a social impact on society by providing better security as you can see who you are talking to.
